Family Law in Woodside, NY

Family matters are decided on facts, but they are lived as loss. We handle both parts — the filings on time, and the conversation before you sign anything you cannot undo.

Almost every family case can be settled, and the ones that settle end faster, cost less and leave co-parents able to speak to one another. We start every matter looking for that resolution.

When the other side is not negotiating in good faith, or when there is a safety concern, we go to court promptly and without apology. Nora Kavanagh leads the practice and appears in Queens County Supreme Court and Queens Family Court.

Free initial consultation.

Thirty minutes with the attorney who would handle the matter — not an intake screener. Call 000-000-000 or send us the details through the contact form.

When to call us

Situations we handle every week

  • You have decided to divorce and want to know what it looks like before you tell anyone.
  • Your former partner is withholding the children or has stopped paying support.
  • You have been served with a Family Court petition.
  • Your circumstances have changed and an existing order no longer fits.
  • You are getting married and one of you is bringing a business or a house.

If you are not sure whether your situation belongs on that list, call anyway. Telling you that you do not need a lawyer is free, and we would rather do that than take a matter that should not exist.

Questions

Family Law — frequently asked

How much does an uncontested divorce cost in Queens?

Where both spouses agree on everything and there are no children or complex assets, an uncontested divorce is handled on a flat fee plus court filing fees. We quote it in writing at the consultation. Contested matters are billed hourly, because their length is set by the other side.

How is child custody decided in New York?

By the best interests of the child. Courts weigh the existing caregiving arrangement, each parent's ability to provide stability, the child's relationships and needs, any history of domestic violence, and — for older children — their own preferences. There is no presumption in favor of either parent.

Can I change a child support order?

Yes, on a showing of a substantial change in circumstances, a three-year passage of time, or a 15% change in either parent's income. Until a court modifies it, the existing order remains enforceable — so file rather than simply paying less.
